VISION

We believe that technology used with vision and good intention can be a powerful tool for promoting education and breaking down social and political barriers. The main goal of the Intersection Project is to provide the inspiration and tools for the installation of low-cost, dedicated video display walls in public areas and schools around the globe.

Intersection installations will provide windows into other cultures, allowing individuals and communities to communicate on a direct, unmediated basis with one another. For example, a city park in Seattle might be connected to a market in Morocco, or a library in Salt Lake City might connect with a town square in Turkey.

In addition to public installations, the Intersection Project will provide the software and technical expertise to enable educators to easily connect their classrooms via video screens with schools in cultures about which the students are learning. This will enable kids to speak directly with other students in foreign countries, just as in the last century, some of our parents or grandparents had pen pals through whom they found a new understanding of distant cultures. These interactions will provide experiential education and allow direct interaction with cultures about which students would otherwise only learn in books.

Although technology continues to make the globe seem smaller and increase our ability to communicate with others, the revolution of local empowerment and global communication that many envisioned for the future has yet to materialize. Technology is a tool that can be used for education and increased communication, or it can be used to promote spectatorship and consumption. Although we can hear news from the farthest ends of the earth, this experience is still shaped by the hands of the large media companies that own access to the airwaves (link).

Our view of most nations comes almost completely from the media, yet these sources are far from unbiased (link). While some media outlets make a modest effort to present a range of viewpoints, the primary mission of these businesses is economic success, not nurturing community or promoting a better future. If more of us had the ability to travel widely, this would not be so much of a problem. However, far too few people have the resources or inclination to make such journeys.

The Intersection Project's work will focus particularly on establishing connections with areas and peoples with whom the United States is in conflict or who play a large but unrecognized role in our lives.

The Intersection Project's installations will allow individuals and communities to communicate on a direct, unmediated basis with people everywhere. We place particular emphasis on facilitating communication with peoples with whom the United States is in conflict (link, link) or who play a large but unrecognized role in our lives.

If you have skills or resources in line with the goals of the Intersection Project, or if you are interested in getting your school or your children's school involved in this work, please contact us.
